Robin Moss, LICSW
In practice since 1990
I see psychotherapy as a process of collaboration between client(s) and therapist in the context of an emotionally trusting relationship.
Many of us at some time in our lives can experience feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, and at a loss to find our way forward. In the process of my helping clients work towards individual goals and satisfying relationships, I help them to draw on their strengths and explore what may be undermining their best intentions. As we take into account each individual’s unique history and significant relationships, we also look at coping patterns that no longer serve them. Clients are empowered to make progress towards becoming their best selves and deepening cherished relationships.
I draw on my training from a variety of areas using those approaches that I think are best suited to a particular client and their identified concerns. Over the past twelve plus years I have especially drawn from the powerful attachment model of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT).
Individuals and Elders: In my work with individuals, as we address challenges they are presently grappling with, we draw on their inner resources and explore their actual and potential sources of support. We also identify what gives their life meaning and satisfaction. In my work with elders in particular, I facilitate reflection on accomplishments and cherished relationships, as well as losses and present concerns.
Couples: In my work with couples, which is an area of particular focus and expertise, I particularly draw on my training from the late Sue Johnson, co-founder of Emotionally, Focused Therapy (EFT), Veronica Kallos-Lilly, Director of the Vancouver Couples and Family Institute, as well as the research from John and Julie Gottman, co-founders of the Gottman Institute. I help couples identify their patterns of interaction and emotional responses that can result in conflict, escalation, emotional distress, and disconnection. I help them better understand their own, and their partner’s fuller experience, their feelings and needs, and in the process, begin to work together to change these patterns, and in so doing, deepen their relationship and strengthen their bond.
I believe it is important for there to be a good match between client(s) and therapist. To this end, I offer an initial consultation to assess whether we might be a good match.
