Cristy Smith, LMHC
In practice since 2013
Whatever you're going through that led you to seek out a therapist is most likely tied to your relationships. Distress or heartache is rarely a solitary experience. Perhaps your family, a friend, a partner or unrequited love, your boss or co-worker, or someone from your past comes to mind. And last, but definitely not least, our relationship with ourselves can be a source of happiness or suffering. The way we talk to ourselves and the things we believe about ourselves can create peace or pain.
I believe suffering is understood and relieved within relationship as well. You could say this is the goal of therapy. The therapist and client form a new relationship- one that can offer support and relief as well as a safe place for the client to process their complex thoughts and emotions.
I practice psychodynamic psychotherapy or “depth therapy”. This form of therapy seeks to explore and understand the deep-rooted, often hidden, motivations that shape a person’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Every one of us had a childhood that shaped how we see the world and experience others, but we’re not always conscious of how our way of perceiving contributes to the suffering we experience as adults. When you find yourself in patterns of behavior or cycles of relating that cause distress or unhappiness, it often relates to past pain or confusion that has been difficult to make sense of.
My role as a therapist is to create an atmosphere of openness, curiosity, and trust so that you can explore whatever is on your mind without needing to censor your thoughts or feelings. This isn’t easy for us socialized creatures who’ve been trained to put our best foot forward. But that’s what is so unique about the therapy relationship. It is the opportunity to be known completely. One of my favorite psychotherapists, Donald Winnicott, once said, “It’s a joy to be hidden and a disaster not to be found.” Befriending the hidden, darker corners of ourselves introduces us to our most authentic, grounded being. The hope of the therapy relationship is for the client to come to know and accept themselves in such a way that there is less anxiety living in one’s own skin and greater ease living in relationship to other people.
